The English language can be a tricky mistress. But when expressed well, she’s a beauty. If you’re a copywriter\u00a0or blogger, I assume you already know the basics of how to make things plural (i.e., man<\/strong> \u2192 men<\/strong>, child<\/strong> \u2192 children<\/strong>, wife<\/strong> \u2192 wives<\/strong>, etc.). Instead, I created this guide on how to make things plural with five tricky writing situations in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acronyms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For some reason, when an abbreviation is written in all caps, it’s tempting to put an apostrophe after it. Don’t! When pluralizing an acronym, simply add an –s<\/em><\/strong>. And make that s<\/em> lower case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CEO\u00a0\u2192 CEOs
SEO\u00a0\u2192\u00a0SEOs
CTR\u00a0\u2192\u00a0CTRs
APB\u00a0\u2192\u00a0APBs
CD\u00a0\u00a0\u2192 CDs<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yes, that includes acronyms that end in –s<\/strong><\/em>. RSS<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192 RSSs<\/strong>. POS<\/strong> \u2192 POSs<\/strong>. I know, it looks a little funny. But I promise\u2026 there’s no reason to add an apostrophe. If it bothers you, reword your copy so you don’t have to use it \u2014 substitute RSS feeds<\/em> or POS systems<\/em>, for example. Just be sure not to be redundant: “PIN numbers” and “ATM machines” are both redundant because the last letter of the acronym stands for number<\/em>\u00a0and machine<\/em>, respectively. To make these acronyms plural, simply write PINs or ATMs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyphenated nouns and compound nouns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When dealing with a hyphenated noun or a noun that is modified by a preposition, only pluralize the noun portion. For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

call-to-action \u2192 calls-to-action
board of director \u2192 boards of directors
father-in-law\u00a0\u2192\u00a0fathers-in-law
lady-in-waiting\u00a0\u2192\u00a0ladies-in-waiting
maid of honor\u00a0\u2192\u00a0maids of honor
right of way\u00a0\u2192\u00a0rights of way<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some compound nouns are nouns modified by an adjective. Once again,\u00a0only pluralize the noun portion. Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

attorney general\u00a0\u2192\u00a0attorneys general
past life\u00a0\u2192\u00a0past lives
six-pack\u00a0\u2192\u00a0six-packs
full moon\u00a0\u2192\u00a0full moons<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last Names<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A few years ago, Slate<\/em> put together the best guide I’ve seen for pluralizing last names<\/a>\u00a0in the context of sending Christmas cards. Because I don’t see a reason to reinvent the wheel, I’ll simply quote it here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A: Add an –s<\/em>. Do not add –ies<\/em>\u00a0or an apostrophe. Merry Christmas from the Murphys.\u00a0<\/em>
Q: What if my last name already ends in an s<\/em>? <\/strong>
A: Add –es<\/em>. Do not add an apostrophe. Season\u2019s greetings from the Simmonses.<\/em>
Q: What if the end of my last name normally functions as an\u00a0irregular noun? <\/strong>
A:\u00a0It is not irregular when it is part of\u00a0a last name. Happy holidays from the Hoffmans. Warm wishes from the Wolfs.\u00a0<\/em>
Q: What would adding an apostrophe do? <\/strong>
A:\u00a0It would\u00a0hurt Tiny Tim<\/s>\u00a0make your last name possessive.
Q: Is there ever a reason to add an apostrophe? <\/strong>
A:\u00a0Only if you want to make your last name possessive.
Q: Why do people add apostrophes? <\/strong>
A: I have no idea.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Nouns that end in –o<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most nouns that end in \u2013o\u00a0<\/em>are pluralized by adding an \u2013s<\/em>, such as silos<\/strong>. But some take –es\u00a0<\/em>instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

embargo \u2192 embargoes
veto\u00a0\u2192 vetoes
echo\u00a0\u2192 echoes
potato\u00a0\u2192 potatoes (who remembers Dan Quayle<\/a>?)
hero\u00a0\u2192 heroes
echo\u00a0\u2192 echoes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also a good place to mention one of my pet peeves: Dos and Don’ts <\/strong>(not Do’s and Don’ts<\/strong> with an apostrophe on the Do). After I recently commented on a blog on Medium, the writer kindly responded<\/a>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You know, I struggled with that before I wrote the post. I wasn\u2019t sure which was correct. I did some research and came across this post<\/a> by Mignon Fogarty (aka Grammar Girl). She writes, in part, \u201cThe Chicago Manual of Style<\/em> and others recommend dos and don\u2019ts.<\/em> The Associated Press and others recommend do\u2019s and don\u2019ts. \u2026<\/em>Unless your editor wishes otherwise, if you write books, spell it dos and don\u2019ts<\/em>; and if you write for newspapers, magazines, or the Web, spell it do\u2019s and don\u2019ts<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

I simply don’t agree with the AP. I don’t believe it decreases confusion; otherwise (as Mignon notes), we’d have to use Do’s and Don’t’s<\/strong>\u00a0to keep the parallel structure. Gross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once and for all: Dos and Don’ts. <\/strong>I’m also looking at you,\u00a0How-tos.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Decades<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you\u2019re pluralizing decades, be careful. Apostrophes here are tricky because you sometimes need them. If you\u2019re leaving off the first two digits of a four-digit era, put an apostrophe at the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the 1970s \u2192 the ’70s
the 2000s\u00a0\u2192 the ’00s
1980s-era fashion\u00a0\u2192 ’80s-era fashion
protests of the 1960s\u00a0\u2192 protests of the ’60s<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DON\u2019T put an apostrophe before the s:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Incorrect<\/strong>: 1980\u2019s, 90\u2019s, 2000\u2019s
Correct<\/strong>: 1980s, 1990s, 2000s or \u201980s, \u201990s, \u201900s<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You only use an apostrophe before an\u00a0s<\/em>\u00a0to make it possessive, not to pluralize it. (Have you sensed a theme yet?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
